Background

As a child, Haruhi Suzumiya believed she led a charmed life. She was highly precocious and loved family, friends, school and sports. Moreover, she was often at the center of wondrous and unexplainable occurences which could only be described as magic. Haruhi felt certain that no-one else's life could be as exciting and interesting as hers. Then, when she was eleven years old, she received a letter informing her that she was in fact a witch, and inviting her to study magic at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The first time she entered Hogwarts and saw the mass of students and teachers assembled in the Great Hall, she was overwhelmed. She'd had no idea that there could be so many witches and wizards. Soon after, she learned that Hogwarts only accounted for a tiny portion of the total wizarding population in the U.K., which was in turn only one of the countries in the world with a sizeable wizarding population.

Haruhi realized that the phenomena she'd thought of as strange and magical were, in fact, extremely commonplace, and experienced by millions of wizards every day. Her existence was not special or unusual; it was quite mundane. With this knowledge, Haruhi sank into a profound melancholy. She then became obsessed with finding something in her world that was out of the ordinary, something that was still mysterious and exciting.

Hogwarts, a History

During free periods, she tended to disappear; other students would sometimes see her striding up and down the corridors and around the schoolgrounds, for reasons unknown. She never lingered in the Great Hall at mealtimes, and only rarely could she be spotted in the common room; when she was, she would always be sitting by herself in a corner, scowling or staring out a window. Haruhi soon developed a reputation for being aloof and eccentric.

In her second year, she tried out for all the available positions on her house's Quidditch team. With her aptitude for sports, she did quite well, and the team captain offered her a spot as a Chaser, but she declined. Then, for whatever reason, she attempted to try out for the other three house teams. Obviously, she was refused. It was also sometime in her second year that she got in trouble (and lost quite a few house points) for drawing a huge, indecipherable pictogram all over the Quidditch green one night. No one was able to figure out what exactly it was that she drew; some said that she had been trying some bizarre spell, while a few muggle-borns joked that she was probably trying to contact aliens.

In her third year, she signed up for every single new subject. When informed that it would be physically impossible for her to take all of those classes concurrently, she filed a request for the use of a Timeturner. Despite her good academic standing, the staff were (quite rightly) wary of giving Haruhi any opportunity to mess with the time-space continuum, and thus denied her request.

In her fourth year, one of her male classmates, eager to have a date on a Hogsmeade weekend, worked up the nerve to ask her out. Given that Haruhi was known for displaying about as much interest in her fellow students as one would have for sacks of potatoes, it came as a shock to everyone when she accepted. Though she ended up ditching the guy within the first twenty minutes of their date, somehow word got around that Haruhi Suzumiya would go out with anyone who asked her. Since she was quite easy on the eyes, a number of boys asked her out; though she always accepted, she dumped each one quickly, once she had determined that he was "normal" and therefore not worth her time.

Now entering her fifth year, Haruhi's latest idea has filled her with renewed energy and sense of purpose. She's decided to found her own brand new Hogwarts house, for anyone who she finds interesting (or anyone who she is able to bully into putting up with her bizarre schemes): the "Spreading Excitement All Over the World with Haruhi Suzumiya House" or "S.O.S. House". No amount of logic, bemused classmates or exasperated professors have been able to deter her from her goal.

Disposition

Haruhi gets good grades in most of her classes without much effort; however, none of them spark her interest enough for her to truly excel. Her best subjects seem to be Transfiguration, Charms, and Arithmancy; her not-so-good subjects are Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures (which she continues to take in the vain hope that they might see dragons one day). She has little to no concern for house rivalries, or for distinctions between Pureblood, Halfblood, and Muggleborn. She's not really an unkind person, but she tends to be self-absorbed and oblivious to the feelings and concerns of others, and is not above resorting to blackmail to get her way. When she has a project to pursue, her energy and optimism seem to be inexhaustible; but when she gets bored or frustrated, she can become morose and lethargic.
